Upcoming Smartphone Technology Part 4 – Under Screen Fingerprint Scanners
We are back with the last part of this series after our previous parts discussed VPS Indoor Navigation, Augmented Reality Apps and Adapted Displays. In this part, we will talk about Under Screen Fingerprint Scanners.
Today, all top security systems and scanners have provisions and functionality of finger-prints scanning. These finger-printscanners authorize the right person to access the secured area or device.
In the world of smartphones, finger-print scanners are limited to most advanced phones but in near future, will come a time when this technology will be a basic feature in all smartphones. Though, in future most scanners might be under the screen.
Utility of Under Screen Fingerprint Scanners:
Today it is natural for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to implement the display technology of phones with new solution. With bezel-less displays becoming a norm, physical home button and fingerprint scanner have been two of the first things to be abandoned in order to widen the screen size in the phone. Now Under-screen solutions are in works.
Avenues of technology Under Screen Fingerprint Scanners:
Many smartphone brands have are modifying their phones, making the fingerprint sensor work as a “power on” or home button.
Some smartphone brands are working on under-screen fingerprint scanners. There have been suggestions that under-screen fingerprint sensor may have been included earlier rather than later. However, only the smartphone makers working on this technology can decide when would they release it and with which model.
Some other brands are working on an invisible embedded solution. Cutting a 0.01 inch (0.03mm) out of the lower backside of the “cover glass”, fingerprint sensor is being placed inside the phone. This makes the sensors waterproof and protects them from scratches.Fingerprint recognition accuracy in this technology is sharper.There are reports that Apple may consider a technology like this.A proprietary adhesive has been used to attach the sensor to the glass. This would make it more durable and capable of high impact absorption.
Some smartphone manufacturers are manufacturing phones ultrasonic sensor which have the finger-print scanning functionality. Such sensors work by emitting ultrasonic sound waves that penetrate the skin of user’s finger and capture a 3D image of his/her fingerprint. This sensor is not affected by ambient light. It would work even if user’s fingers are wet. Efforts are on to manufacture an advanced version of this sensor that works under water.
New technology is expected to support Qualcomm Sense ID in a wide range of chipsets supporting ultrasonic 3D fingerprint mapping.
Physical home buttons with integrated fingerprint scanners are still available in various phones and are expected to stay a bit longer. One should not be surprised in near future if the flagship smartphones offered by all major smartphone brands sport fancier and hidden alternatives.
