Google Camera now available for non-Nexus devices; Check out our Verdict!

Owners of Google’s Nexus Smartphones certainly have bragging rights. They get the latest features from Google first, and don’t have to deal with heavy customizations to those features by their phone manufacturer.

However, it now seems that Google is keen on extending these features to non-nexus devices, and the first case in point is the release of Google Camera on the Play Store. For nexus owners, Google Camera is the default camera app. For those using non-nexus Smartphones, should you download this app? Well, let’s find out!

The first thing you will notice about Google Camera is its minimalistic design. For a camera app, Google camera is quite fun. It comes with five modes including Panorama Mode, Photosphere Mode, regular Camera Mode, Video Mode, and a unique feature called Lens Blur mode. While the rest of the features are self-explanatory and often found in most camera apps, the lens blur feature allows you to focus on the subject while keeping the background blurry. This is a feature usually used by professional photographers using DSLR cameras. You can even adjust the level of blurring you want, after the picture is taken.

We tinkered around with the camera app for a few hours, and found that just about every feature is just one swipe away. The app is extremely snappy, and we didn’t experience at anytime during our testing. We ran the app on a quite a few Swipe Fablets, and found that it is just as responsive on the budget Fablets as it is on high end one’s.

That being said, there is one limitation to this app. You can only save pictures on the phone memory, and there is no option to select the memory card as default storage. We wish Google had addressed this issue, but then there are always future updates to look forward to.

All in all, this is a cool app to have, and you can download it for free here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.GoogleCamera
